It is advisable to wear stones or gems relating to those planets which are well placed and receiving favourable aspects to further enhance their benign powers. Those planets tend to indicate the characteristics that we are most 'at home with' within ourselves. A common mistake is for someone to wear or to use a stone associated with a quality they wish to possess or enhance, but which is not naturally assimilated by them. A gemstone will not endow us with some mystical quality which we lack, rather it will act a tool to enhance the abilities we already possess - and thereby making us in a stronger position to seek within ourselves for the qualities we wish to develop.

The correct procedure that should be followed is explained here. The stone or gem should be worn in such a way that a part of the surface touches the skin and the other is exposed to atmosphere.
